Curriculum Intents
Curriculum Intent Documents
At Churchward School, it is our intent that:
At Churchward School, our aim is to re-engage students who have faced challenging school journeys, anxiety about learning, and significant trauma by offering a curriculum that is motivating, supportive, and tailored to individual needs. We strive to rebuild trust and relationships within a welcoming, refreshed school community for our children, young people, and their families. The curriculum is designed around each learner, with exceptional care, guidance, and targeted support to help every student reach their academic potential and feel valued as part of our community.
Central to our approach is a vibrant, nurturing learning environment within a safe ASC (Autistic Spectrum Condition) specialist setting that respects sensory differences and diverse needs. We move beyond differentiation to genuine personalization, placing each student’s strengths, interests, and choices at the heart of decision making. Our collaborative team works around the student to shape a curriculum that equips them with the broad knowledge, skills, and experiences needed for success. The Thrive Approach and our targeted interventions address gaps in learning and development, supporting students to realise their personal and academic potential.
We aim to equip students with the cultural capital and life values that foster independence and interdependence. As a specialist school for autism and social communication needs, we emphasise transferable skills that prepare students for adult life. Our aspirations include:
- Gaining knowledge and making informed choices
- Developing numeracy and literacy throughout life
- Recognising risks and seeking help to stay safe
- Regulating emotions and supporting mental well-being
- Identifying and drawing inspiration from curriculum elements to build teamwork, problem solving, empathy, perseverance, resilience, curiosity, and creativity
- Building healthy, respectful relationships
- Upholding democratic values, tolerance, mutual respect, the rule of law, and liberty in a diverse society
- Developing responsible attitudes to physical health, nutrition, and ongoing physical activity
- Engaging in fulfilling recreational activities
- Valuing and incorporating student voice, while considering others’ viewpoints
- Continuing education and building qualifications to achieve personal goals
- Contributing to the community through employment or voluntary work and developing financial understanding
Accreditation is a core aim, with all students encouraged to leave Churchward School with at least five qualifications at varying different levels. We provide regular opportunities for progression across Key Stages 4 and 5, designed to build confidence and reduce stress around exams while still recognizing achievements along the journey.
Our teaching and learning offer is high quality, consistent, and aspirational across the curriculum. It is personalized and adaptable to each child’s learning difficulty, style, and ability. We invest in robust target-setting and annual reviews, ensuring Education and Health Care Plans (EHCPs) remain live, actionable documents that guide learning inside and beyond the classroom. This holistic approach ensures we meet each student’s needs and provide a relevant, meaningful curriculum that supports transitions to the next phase of education or employment. Ultimately, we aim for exceptional holistic progress, helping every student become a confident, independent young person equipped with the life and work skills for a sustainable, fulfilling future.
